Julie Whalen – Volunteers

On a snowy beautiful night, back in the 90s, my husband and I met Don on a small group run downtown Grand Rapids. Of course, the run was followed by a beer, warming up at the old original Founders building. The rest is history, as I have been involved with the Grand Rapids Marathon since running the inaugural race. I am even one of the original lifetime-entry runners.

Numerous races have taken us around the world, including all six world major marathons. Recently they added Sydney as the seventh world major, so it looks like this race is on our horizon. Then, “Why not all seven continents?” Our adventures even took us to Bhutan with Don to run a marathon (and have dinner with the prince!). We have also run countless half marathons, Riverbank Runs, half Ironman races, and a full Ironman. The racing community and experiences are absolutely amazing!

We are a family who has been running, hiking (recently Patagonia), and doing triathlons together for years. I have been married for 27 years and have a 19-year-old son who is a collegiate runner and a 17-year-old daughter who is a high-school runner and basketball player.

What I like most is not about how many races we have completed or strive to complete but about seeing and helping others succeed in their dreams. Everyone has a story. I find this very inspiring.

What is so awesome is how many volunteers come back year after year, so get your name on the list!
