George Ranville – Start/Finish Area
George Ranville – Start/Finish Area
Mark Sisson and I have been setting up the Start/Finish area for so long that it is second nature to us. When I see a couple of problem areas, I know that Mark will be handling one while I’m on the other. I’ve been on the Marathon staff since 2006.
Every year, Mark and I are dedicated to making your experience here better and, most importantly, safe. Before you arrive, we are coordinating road closures, fencing, electrical power, tents, banners, flags, heat for the med tent, tables and chairs, trash cans, toilets, beer garden set-up, and security around the starting area. Our goal is to be standing around calmly well before the singing of the national anthem. And so far, no one has been hit by a vehicle in the excitement of race morning chaos in the pre-sunrise darkness!
I conquered my first marathon at Grandma’s in Duluth and then ran Grand Rapids, Glass City in Toledo, Bayshore in Traverse City, Marquette in da U.P., and Marine Corps Marathon in DC. Today you will find me going for morning walks along the Straits of Mackinac near the bridge, mountain biking, and attending weekly yoga class.
In Mackinaw City, we operate Biere De Mac Brew Works. Come discover the finest “Up North” beer garden, surrounded by birch trees and fire pits, while enjoying the fine Belgian style beer our brewers produce.
When the race starts, you will find me in my usual position, on the right side under the Start/Finish banner ensuring no one runs into the base. Give me a high five as you head out onto the course! Have a great, and safe race!
